Hello watchers

Some people ask me how I learned to draw and what tips I can give them! So I wrote a tutorial and hope it will help! Here are my tips for you to become a better drawer!

  1. First of all a good drawing stands with good materials. Good paper (no copy paper) and good pencils. If you're not sure, the expensive ones are mostly pretty good! For graphite I use Staedtler Mars Lumograph and for colour Faber-Castell "Polycromos".
  2. You need to use different numbers of pencils: 4H for very light areas and 6B for the dark areas. A big contrast in a drawing makes a better drawing! You can't make a good drawing with one HB pencil. You need a 6B or 4B to create more depth in the drawing.
  3. Choose a good picture. The greatest drawer in the world can't make a good drawing from a bad picture. A high-resolution image is necessary to see all the details! Next to the high-resolution, it has to be an interesting picture. The result could be a beautiful drawing, however a boring image wouldn't attract any attention.
  4. Beginners sometimes tend to draw a line around the face. Never do that! Nobody has a line around his face! There's only a difference between light and darker areas! If there is no difference, the viewer can use it's imagination. That's the interesting part.
  5. When you're drawing, it's a good idea to exaggerate some elements. You might think at a certain point it's too much, although it may just be enough.
  6. Don't push it, everybody needs time to learn! Here is one simple rule: "The more you practice, the better you become!".
  7. Take your time. Making a good drawing with a lot of details takes time, so be patient! My best drawings took 10 to 20 hours!
  8. Experiment. Realistic drawings are made by thousands of good artists! If you can make something refreshing and new, you will be successful.
  9. Never give up your dream to be a good drawer!
  10. Even the best drawers are continuously trying to perfect themselves.
Success with your drawing. I hope this will help and inspire you guys to keep up the good work.

With best regards

Martin
